If Stalor and Oshain were to communicate directly, Lumen suspected her newfound community would not have survived the summer. The army drifted back and forth between the temple and the village, scouts constantly on the lookout to see who was attacking from what side. She waited for the day when the south and north rose up against them at the same time and the army divided, but it didn’t come. Only a matter of time, her dark voice warned her.

If the soldiers were exhausted from the constant juggle of battles, Lumen carried her own weariness from traveling to and fro to see to their injuries. She widened her usual territory for foraging to keep up with the demands of minor injuries and preventing infections. The small chapel filled up for new moon prayer with the added new residents in the area, and small cabins and cottages were springing up on open land. Gideon did his best to keep her out of the fields so she could focus on her more spiritual works, and he would've kept her out of the post-battle infirmary if he could have. Lumen had learned stubbornness and relished putting her foot down.

She never lost her desperate need to see Gideon safe when the swords were done clashing, no matter how many skirmishes passed. Although Finley had been right that Gideon took more care with himself on the battlefield now.

"You haven't corrected any of my wrappings," Finley said, moving to her side where she was reorganizing her stock after the bustle of nursing.

His voice was smooth in her ear as he stood like a tall shadow out of the corner of her eye, but one she was finding comforting the more hours they spent working together like this. The tension between them from her arrival was gone, or it had grown into a friendship built from their work and their worries. His intensity had retreated, and in its wake there was new room for her to grow more open and bold. As for the kiss…Finley never mentioned it, and she decided it might be wiser to let it go. He still had feelings perhaps, and she still had…Gideon.

"That's because you've finally started using my technique," she said, glancing across the room to a soldier with his wrist recently wrapped. She passed Finley a cup of white willow bark tea to give to the man for his pain and swelling

"For someone with no formal training, you are awfully sure of your methods," Finley said, lips twitching with a smirk.

"For someone with formal training, you had an awful lot to learn from me," Lumen answered.

Finley huffed and shook his head, fingertips grazing against the back of her hand and leaving a trail of glittering warmth as he took the cup and crossed the room. Lumen watched him walk, eyes snagging on the breadth of his shoulders leading down to the nip of his waist, heat tickling her cheeks, before she caught sight of Gideon waiting in the doorway to the courtyard.
